Dr. Gerald "Jerry" L. McCoy served as Superintendent of Eden Prairie Schools from 1980 to 1996, leading the district through a period of transformative growth. Dr. McCoy was a driving force behind the transition to a single in-person high school and oversaw the strategic placement of elementary schools to best serve Eden Prairie’s rapidly growing population. Under his leadership, Eden Lake Elementary (1986), Cedar Ridge Elementary (1988) and Oak Point Intermediate (1990) were opened to meet the needs of a changing community.

Known for his extraordinary ability to remember names, Dr. McCoy fostered a welcoming, relationship-centered environment within Eden Prairie Schools, a culture that lives on today. During his tenure, the district was recognized for the first time with a National Blue Ribbon Schools award (Eden Prairie High School) by the U.S. Department of Education.

Dr. McCoy built a legacy grounded in relationships and community connection in Eden Prairie. His active involvement in organizations such as the Eden Prairie Foundation, Meals on Wheels, Optimist Club, Rotary Club, Fairview Southdale Hospital Board of Directors and the Minnesota Dental Board exemplified his ongoing dedication to public service.

Dr. McCoy earned a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature/Letters from Minnesota State University, Mankato; a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from the University of Illinois; and his doctorate degree from the University of Minnesota.
